Lifesaving Courses

Junior Lifesaving

The Junior Lifesaving Course is for any members aged 12 and under who are not yet old enough to begin their lifeguard certification journey but are interested in learning about the required theoretical and practical knowledge. Students will be introduced to fundamental first aid and aquatic lifesaving techniques as well as develop the swimming endurance necessary to become a lifeguard. This course is not required in order to become a certified lifeguard. The course is offered 2x per week by a member of our Lifeguard team (see weekly schedule).

Lifeguarding Courses: Bronze Medallion and Bronze Cross:

The Bronze Medallion and Bronze Cross courses are for any members aged 13-17 looking to become lifeguards in the future (see required certification path below). The courses are offered for 3 hours per week for approximately 10 weeks (see the monthly schedule for the start date and the weekly schedule for when the course is offered).

Students will follow the Lifesaving Society’s curriculum, learning fundamental first aid and aquatic lifesaving techniques from a certified lifesaving instructor as well as another member of our Lifeguard team. They will also develop the swimming endurance needed to become a lifeguard (i.e. the ability to swim 300-400m consecutively as well as carry an adult while treading water). Medallion and Cross are separate courses, however the students are taught at the same time since much of the material overlaps between the two courses. Course-specific instruction is given whenever needed.

Both courses are followed by an examination at the end of the summer, typically in late August. Students must pass the exam to obtain the certification. To be eligible to take the exam, students must attend a minimum of 80% of the instruction time. Please note that there is a small fee charged by the Lifesaving Society to take the exam.

Certifications required to become a lifeguard:

  1. Bronze Medallion

  2. Bronze Cross

  3. Standard First Aid (offered at several indoor pools)

  4. National Lifeguard (offered at several indoor pools)
